SAPEA Workshop on Academies’ interaction

The SAPEA project (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) has recently hosted two workshops that aimed to strengthen cooperation among Academies and to support individual Academies in providing evidence-based policy advice.
These workshops offered the opportunity for Academies to meet and exchange ideas, with discussions on topics such as challenges faced by Academies when providing scientific advice for policy, working models and organisational structures, or strategies used for promoting Academy activities.
The two workshops took place on 21-22 September in Madrid, Spain, hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering, and on 16-17 October in Bucharest, Romania, co-hosted by the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania.
A welcome and introduction to the works was provided by the Spanish and Romanian national Academies spanning from the disciplines of engineering, humanities, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences, including FEAM Member Academies the Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine and the Romanian Academy for Medical Sciences.
As a follow up, Prof. Jesús Fernández-Tresguerres, FEAM Past President and Fellow of the Spanish Royal National Academy of Medicine, said: “The SAPEA workshop was a great opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with colleagues from Academies all over Europe and to explore how Academies can feed into the SAPEA project. We look forward to contributing to this promising initiative”.
Prof. Maria Dorobantu, Fellow of the Romanian Academy for Medical Sciences, mentioned: “The SAPEA project is unprecedented as it brings together the outstanding knowledge and expertise of Fellows from all over Europe. The workshop was instrumental in better understanding how we can join forces to constitute a critical source of evidence for policymakers and the wider public”.
At the workshops, FEAM also had the opportunity to present the FEAM European Biomedical Policy Forum, a new initiative which aims to provide a platform for discussion on key policy issues for the biomedical community.
